About Rafaela

I was first exposed to Flamenco in Cadiz, Spain, my birthplace. Cadiz is in the heart of Andalucia, the province of Spain where Flamenco originated. (see links on left sidebar for more information)

Rafaela singing on the radio at age eight

Flamenco has been in my heart since a very early age. My first professional engagement was singing on the radio at age eight. I also performed at theaters and festivals. When I reached the age of thirteen, my father forbid me from continuing to perform. After his death, however, I did continue and joined a Flamenco group that performed throughout Spain.

In 1975, I came to Portland, Oregon with my young son. Since my arrival, I have tried to raise awareness about the beautiful art of Flamenco.

I have taught Flamenco at Portland Community College and Portland State University. I also offer group and private classes at my studio. Classes are available for everyone from beginners to advanced and even children. Flamenco doesn't require a particular age, height or weight. You can just be yourself.

My goal is to continue to share the beauty of Flamenco dance and song with the community of Portland. I want more people to feel the passion and power of this art form. Flamenco dance is very therapeutic and nourishes both the soul and spirit. Singing and dancing Flamenco has kept me healthy physically, mentally and emotionally through some very difficult times. Flamenco is not just a dance; it is a way of life, a way to free your spirit.

Ole. Viva Flamenco!
